Prelude

Ula Sickle, Stine Janvin Motland & Yann Leguay
Performance 55min (2014)

In Prelude Ula Sickle and Yann Leguay work for the first time with the Norwegian vocalist Stine Janvin Motland. With her use of extended vocal technique, Motland explores the limits of the human voice, entering into dialogue with the amplified elements present onstage. The hum of electricity, the buzz of the lights, digital noise, feedback and Motland's eerie vocals all create an intricate musical score between the organic and the inorganic, the human and the digital.

Prelude arises out of the reflection that the body is rapidly becoming an extension of technology and not the inverse - technology as an extension of the body. Current ecological interest in notions of 'resilience', as opposed to 'sustainability', posits a world in which radical and unexpected change will become the norm, requiring us to develop our abilities to adapt rather than imposing our own order on an unstable environment. In this sense, Prelude is both an introduction and a warning call: to what extent can we adapt or ‘tune’ ourselves into, or are irrevocably transformed by, the environments we have ourselves created.
